There are many reasons a person may find themselves needing to take a break from their focus on fitness; scheduling conflicts, health issues, injury recovery, or simply losing motivation can all take their toll on your ability to work out. Whatever the reason for your break, getting back to your usual pattern becomes your priority.
Unfortunately, returning to fitness after a prolonged break is not necessarily the simplest of tasks. However, there’s no time like the present, so start by setting a few fitness goals for summer and then keeping the following tips in mind as you (re)start your fitness journey…
#1 – Identify and overcome previous issues
While it is important to focus on your new future and the fitness goals you are hoping to achieve, it’s also worth considering why your focus on fitness slipped to begin with – and how you can prevent such a scenario from happening again.
If you, for example, had to take a fitness break due to injury, then you may want to think about options for preventing or limiting the chances of experiencing injuries in future. Small tweaks – such as wearing supports or improving your form – can be hugely beneficial in this regard. Alternatively, if scheduling problems were the cause of your fitness pause, then it might be worth considering switching to shorter, more impactful training – such as HIIT – that allows you to see the highest return in the shortest possible time. Last but not least, if motivation was a factor, it’s worth thinking about why you lost your motivation. In many cases, a perceived lack of progress is the root cause of motivation issues; if you feel this may apply to you, then consider working with a personal trainer to help refine your workouts and ensure you can consistently build towards your desired results.
#2 – Set a definitive start date
When you’re out of the habit of working out, it can be hugely tempting to keep postponing your eventual return – you’ll go back to the gym, or book that session with a personal trainer, next week. Unfortunately, “next week” can keep being postponed, to the point where months have passed and you’re still no closer to making your return. This kind of delay is entirely natural, but it is something that needs to be overcome.
To do so, it is helpful to set a very definitive start date for your first workout, and to plan this into your schedule very specifically. It may also help to tell a few friends and family members that you’ll be restarting on this date also; not only does doing so help with accountability, but you’ll also be assured of their support and good wishes when the big day arrives.
#3 – Manage your expectations
Unfortunately, a long break from working out will likely have had an impact on your fitness. While this is to be expected, it is inherently disheartening to realize that things you used to be able to do with ease now suddenly feel incredibly difficult.
To overcome this problem, you first need to be kind to yourself. Sure, you had to pause your workouts and your fitness levels have been impacted, but you’re now rectifying the issue – you’re doing the right thing, so try to hold on to that. Yes, it’s irritating to feel that you’re starting over from scratch, but these things happen; focus your energy on your future, rather than worrying about the past.
Secondly, it’s also important to look for support. The best source of this support is likely to be a personal trainer; they will be able to assess your fitness as it is right now, and then formulate the most effective way for you to get back on track. In addition, it’s also helpful to talk to your friends and family about what you are experiencing; they can encourage you to keep going on the tougher days, which make it all the simpler for you to get back into the swing of things.
#4 – Focus on recovery management
When you first start working out again, you will probably find that you recover a little slower – and potentially with more aches and pains – than you did when you were working out regularly. This is entirely natural; your body is adjusting to your higher activity levels after a period of relative inactivity, so it may take awhile until you’re able to bounce back from a strenuous workout once more.
Due to the above, it’s helpful to remind yourself of the best way to recover after a workout so you can limit the discomfort you may experience. Think about factors such as hydration – not forgetting the importance of electrolytes – and consider taking hot baths or using heat treatment after each gym session. In addition, it’s also worth making a few tweaks to your diet to ensure you’re eating enough of the right nutrients; focus on foods that are rich in protein, leafy green vegetables, and healthy fats.
#5 – Celebrate every milestone
As your fitness begins to improve, it’s important to give yourself the licence to celebrate your achievements as you achieve milestones – even if you have previously achieved, or even bettered, those milestones in the past.
For example, if prior to your fitness break you could run 5K in 25 minutes, then running a 5K in half an hour may not feel like something you should celebrate… but if you had only been able to run a 5K in 45 minutes when you first started working out again, you’ve clearly improved, and that’s worthy of celebration. Try to focus on your achievements as they are now rather than comparing them to previous goals you had surpassed; you’re in an entirely new phase of fitness, and what went before can largely be disregarded as you seek to focus on the present.
The tips above should help you to get return to fitness in the simplest, and most effective, way possible, as well as allowing you to look forward and enjoy all of the benefits of regular exercise long into the future.
A number of different fitness trends have come into play over the past few years. Women are being inspired by the thousands of Instagram stars showcasing just how you can get healthy and look great too. Although this is encouraging women to get to the gym, there is still a stigma surrounding lifting weights. You may have heard the myths flying around – that it will make you look bulky or it’s only for young people. But, in fact, there are plenty of benefits to weight training for people of all ages, and here are some of the top reasons to incorporate it into your gym routine.
Helps you look leaner
Many people think that weight training is just about building huge muscles and being able to lift big weights. However, it can actually help you look leaner without getting bulky. Some people are also put off as it can, in fact, make you gain weight, but by losing fat and gaining muscle, your body will look more defined and slimmer compared to no weight training in your routine. You should try to avoid thinking about the number on the scales and just focus on creating a healthy body that you are comfortable with.
Creates healthy bones and joints
Another myth is that lifting weights is bad for your joints and strains your muscles. Ok, so this might be true if you’re training incorrectly and are lifting weights above your capability. However, with a comprehensive training plan, lifting weights promotes bone development and improves skeletal muscle aging. If you suffer from lower back pain too, it can also reduce this with regular training and correct techniques.
Improves mental wellbeing
Any type of exercise contributes to improved mental and physical wellbeing, and weight training is no different. It can also be a significant stress reliever too. According to studies, there is a connection between resistance training and a reduction in stress and anxiety. Popping to the gym can also be a welcome relief after a frustrating day, and can help you relax as you’re focusing on training and improving your body.
Alongside feeling healthier, many people want to improve their body as it makes them feel happier about their body image. When individuals feel good about themselves and how they look, it can enhance confidence tenfold. Of course, it’s not just about looking a certain way or trying to fit in with the latest fitness trends. But training for your own personal goals and achieving them is a great way to boost your motivation and encourage you to strive for other purposes. By building your confidence in the gym, it can improve your outlook on life in general and support your aspirations in a number of different areas such as relationships and careers.
You don’t have to lift big weights either as starting with exercises such as a kettlebell deadlift will help you feel the benefits of the above. But if you’re stuck on where to start, ask a personal trainer for advice and put together a plan to help improve your life.
I recently received the Silk 18Shampoo for my hair. I have used this amazing conditioner for about two weeks now, and I am in Love. My hair is on the thinner side, and this instantly made it feel thicker. I couldn’t believe how it made my hair feel in such a short time.

I used this weekly , and sometimes I would actually sleep in it for the night. I would then rinse the next morning with a continued style. I have referred this shampoo and conditioner out to many people . They have had the same response. It literally changes your hair. I felt that my hair strands felt stronger also. It is amazing how your hair starts to feel as you age. Your hair can get thinner and feel more limp. The Silk 18 shampoo improved many aspects about my hair.
It is really hard for people to find products that work well with their hair. Everyone’s hair is different and they need to use certain products to achieve the look they want. I love eating Vegan. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to eating any other type of food lifestyle. The way my body feels after eating this way , and the energy that I have from adopting this type of eating style is amazing. The crazy thing about eating Vegan is that everyone thinks its a major food change. It is, but in such a great way. There are SO many amazing, delicious recipes out there. I’m literally hooked on the Vegan Way Of Life. There are many great substitutions for your favorite ingredients.
This is one of my Favorite Recipes. I absolutely love pancakes, but never liked the way they made me feel before. I stumbled across this amazing Vegan recipe from a friend, and I am addicted to them. I do add fruit and a bit of cinnamon to them. They are So Yummy. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
1 1/4 Cup Almond Flour
2 Tablespoons Stevia
2 teaspoons Baking powder
1/2 tsp Himalayan salt
1 1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon coconut oil
You want to sift your flour, sugar, baking powder, salt in a large bowl. Whisk the water and oil together in a small bowl. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients, and pour in the wet area. Stir enough until blended.
Heat a pan ( preferably stainless steel) with coconut oil. Place the batter in. Cook until the bubbles form and they are browned. Repeat on both sides.
Once they are done, you can add a bit of cinnamon and fruit toppings to it. I also love adding a bit of coconut yogurt to the top too. These are truly delicious.
Eating Vegan isn’t as hard as you might think. It may take you time, but overall it truly has helped me feel better and have more energy. If this is something you have thought of doing, but is a bit skeptical, that’s normal. Take it one day at a time.
