Regular exercise offers so many benefits, but how do you go about maximizing your chances of hitting targets and achieving goals? If you’re ready and raring to go, here are some handy hacks to get the best out of every session.
Set realistic goals
It’s brilliant to have goals when you’re working on your fitness, but it’s critical to make sure that your targets are realistic. If you’ve never trained before, you’re not going to be able to run a marathon after a week at the gym. Be optimistic, but focus on goals that are within your reach. This will encourage you to work hard and to get an idea of what you’re capable of. Aim for gradual progression, and hang in there if it takes a little longer than planned to arrive at those major milestones. Count the small victories, as well as the more significant goals. A week before you started, you might not even have considered going for a run in the rain. If you put your trainers on and got out there and completed a circuit, you can be proud of yourself even if you didn’t run a personal best.
Nothing sets you back when you’re working towards a fitness goal like an injury. When you start training, it’s critical to build your fitness gradually, to perfect your technique and to work hard without running the risk of overtraining. It’s common to feel uncomfortable when you’re nearing the finish line, or you’re on your last set of burpees or weights, but you shouldn’t be in pain. If you are prone to injury, or you’ve had an injury in the past, it’s a good idea to seek advice from a trainer or a doctor and consider options like taking medication or undergoing physiotherapy. If your injury is an issue, you can work around it by doing exercises and activities that will boost your health and fitness without aggravating the affected muscles or joints. Always make time for a thorough warm-up before you train and cool down after a session.
Many of us approach a new fitness plan with bags of energy and enthusiasm, but it’s not always easy to maintain motivation. If you are struggling to muster up the strength to leave the couch, or the novelty of training has worn thin, remember why you started. Focus on the positives of regular exercise, and remember that you’ll never regret making the decision to go for a jog, play a game of tennis or hit the gym. Think about how far you’ve come and try and make training fun. You don’t have to do the same workout time and time again. Vary your sessions, try new activities and classes, and introduce some healthy competition by training with a partner or some friends.
